Important

This guide provides general education and does not diagnose a condition or replace individual medical or physiotherapy assessment.

01

The first certificate comes from a doctor

A medical practitioner completes the initial Certificate of Fitness so the person’s diagnosis and broader health needs can be medically assessed.

02

Subsequent certificates

SIRA states that subsequent Certificates of Fitness can be issued by a treating physiotherapist or psychologist. The certificate must relate to an injury within the treating practitioner’s area of expertise and use the designated SIRA form.

03

What the certificate communicates

  • The motor accident injury
  • Treatment and recovery information
  • Capacity for work and usual activities
  • Functional restrictions
  • The period covered by the certificate
04

The GP still has an important role

Physiotherapy certification does not replace medical care. Medical review remains important for diagnosis, medicines, complex health issues, new symptoms, investigations and any matter outside physiotherapy scope.

05

Check the current form

Use the current SIRA Certificate of Fitness form and confirm any insurer requirements. The clinic can discuss whether physiotherapy certification is appropriate in the individual circumstances.
